BLM plans new wild horse roundups in Nevada
The U.S. Bureau of Land Management said it plans to remove about 200 wild horses from public range in western Nevada during a series of three roundups later this month and in December.
The first, beginning Wednesday, will gather 94 mustangs 35 miles east of Carson City and south of the Lahontan State Recreation Area.
About 67 horses will be targeted starting Nov. 20 in the Pine Nut Herd area along the Buckskin range in Lyon County. Another 45 mares will be temporarily removed, given a two-year fertility control vaccine and returned to the range.
On Nov. 27, a roundup of about 50 horses begins in the Pilot Mountain area near the Hawthorne Army Depot. Plans to remove horses from within the military installation's borders have been put on hold.
